(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that if both parties fail to reach a mutual compromise, Cambodia’s choice remains peace pursued through negotiations and adherence to international law.

Samdech Techo spoke on Monday (Jun. 16) in a special message.

The Senate president emphasised that the dispute concerning the four zones such as Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, and Ta Krabei Temple, and the Emerald Triangle area cannot be settled through bilateral discussions and must await a resolution from the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

“If both parties are unable to find a common ground, our option must be the peaceful route and compliance with international law. Both mechanisms including bilateral negotiations and legal proceedings through the ICJ are peaceful paths. Referring the case to the international court is not an act of war or aggression,” Samdech Techo underscored.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen continued that in recent days, he had made it abundantly clear that while Thailand might seek military confrontation, Cambodia chooses peace by referring the case to the ICJ.

“Cambodia is not lacking in weapons or capacity to fight. But we do not wish for conflict. Cambodia has demonstrated its willingness and has the capability to defend its territory if necessary. However, we do not want to fight anyone. Our sole intention is to safeguard our sovereignty. Though the border stretches over 800 kilometres, the dispute in these four specific areas such as Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, Ta Krabei Temple, and the Emerald Triangle area remains unresolved,” Samdech Techo concluded.
